Edison vs. El Modena
The records--Edison (1-0), El Modena (0-0).
The site--El Modena High School
Edison update--The Chargers opened the season last week with a 21-0 victory over St. Anthony on the island of Maui. Tailback Kaleaph Carter rushed for 124 yards on 14 carries and scored 3 touchdowns. He had 97 yards rushing by halftime. Mike Henderson, who has moved from wide receiver to quarterback, passed for 113 yards on 8-of-18 pass attempts. Junior Rob Simonson had two fumble recoveries. Tight end Zack Szakacs (broken hand) and offensive guard Tom Witherby (bruised knee) will not play.
El Modena update--The Bill Backstrom Era begins tonight as the 11-year assistant replaces Bob Lester as only the school’s second head coach. Backstrom has Ross Bauer returning, but the multitalented athlete will be making his debut at quarterback after starting at tailback last season for the Vanguards. He will also start at linebacker. Tackle Matt Alcauter (6-1, 250) anchors a solid offensive line.
Consensus--El Modena handed Edison only its fourth shutout in the past 13 years in the 1985 opener with a 14-0 victory. Look for Edison to gain a measure of revenge.
