Hawaii’s Lt. Gov. John Waihee defied pollsters to win the Democratic nomination to succeed Gov. George Ariyoshi, and will face Republican D. G. (Andy) Anderson in November. Waihee defeated former Rep. Cecil L. Heftel, who had a 21-point lead in a recent poll. Mufi Hannemann, formerly on Vice President George Bush’s staff, edged state Sen. Neil Abercrombie for the Democratic nomination for Honolulu’s 1st Congressional District seat, vacated by Heftel. Hannemann will face Republican Patricia Saiki and Libertarian Blase Harris in November. Abercrombie won a separate election to fill the remainder of Heftel’s term.
