Community College Roundup : Parsel’s Record Gives OCC Win in Cross-Country

Orange Coast College sophomore Dave Parsel set a course record Wednesday in the Pirates’ 15-50 Orange Empire Conference cross-country win over Riverside at Huntington Beach.
Parsel covered the four-mile Central Park course in 19 minutes 39 seconds. That broke the record of 19:51 set last season by Jose Alcaraz, who finished sixth Wednesday. Orange Coast (3-0) took the top 10 spots. Jerry Stewart (21:28) was second, Jim Manyard (21:33) third, Pat Hernandez (21:39) fourth and Sal Alcaraz (21:42) fifth.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s cross-country action:
Orange Coast 15, Riverside 50--Delinda Patino ran the three-mile course in 19:36 as the Pirates (3-0) took the top 12 places. Debbie Lies and Julie Yost tied for second at 20:29. Beth Buchanan (20:29) was fourth and Tracy Wright (20:30) fifth.
In nonconference water polo action:
Rancho Santiago 11, Santa Monica 7--Darin Haskins, Troy Simington and Greg Clark scored three goals each for the Dons (10-1) in Santa Ana.
Golden West 13, USC JV 10--Alan Buchanan scored five goals and Jason Jeffries added three to lead the Rustlers.
Mt. San Antonio 5, Orange Coast 3--Chad Cooper, Richard Pilon and John McPortland scored for the Pirates (2-5).
In nonconference volleyball action:
Cypress 3, Mt. San Antonio 0--Lisa Johnson had 10 kills to lead the Chargers (1-3) in Cypress. Stephanie Lockart had eight and Tracie Bowman seven. The Mounties are 0-1.
Orange Coast 3, Cerritos 0--Karen Nickel had eight kills and Karen Rochow had 18 assists to help the Pirates (3-2) to the win.
