THE BUNNY-EAT-BUNNY WORLD OF CARTOONING

I was personally offended by Solomon’s article.

I am an executive producer and writer of children’s programs. Over the last 10 years I have written more than 340 animated teleplays for dozens of Saturday morning series, including most of the episodes of “Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies,” for which I won two Emmy Awards and the Humanitas Prize.

I was not offended because Solomon panned any of my shows. I was offended because The Times allowed someone to review the new Saturday morning lineup who obviously has nothing positive to say about anything.

Solomon ruthlessly hacks apart every new series without exception. I make no excuses for the quality of Saturday morning programming. Everyone in the business would like to do Disney-quality animation with Kipling-quality stories, but there are both time and money restrictions.

Some of us try very hard to create quality programming that will give the children of America something of value to take away from the TV set. We don’t always succeed, but we always produce shows that are more exciting than test patterns.

I think I speak for the kids of America when I say “Who cares what some grumpy old man with no animation left in his spirit thinks about cartoons anyway?”
