A judge in Hackensack, N.J., postponed for nearly two months the trial of a surrogate mother fighting for custody of the child she agreed to bear for a couple. Superior Court Judge Harvey R. Sorkow, who has twice delayed the unprecedented trial, set Jan. 5 as the new date. The dispute involves William and Elizabeth Stern of Tenafly and Mary Beth Whitehead, a 29-year-old Brick Township housewife who bore the couple a child for a fee of $10,000. The Sterns have temporary custody of the girl, known as Baby M.
