PLEASANTON, Calif. — A striking teacher used his picket sign to stop a man from dragging a screaming woman into a pickup truck, police said Friday.
Neil Shumate, a teacher at Fairlands Grade School, was walking the picket line when he saw a man get out of his truck and grab Nanette Levesque, 39, who was talking with friends nearby, police said.
The man clutched her arm and said, “Hey, girl, come with me,” police said.
But Shumate rushed over and hit the assailant with his picket sign and captured him with the help of a security guard. Levesque was not hurt.
William Espeseth was booked at Santa Rita jail in Dublin on drug and kidnaping charges. Bail was set at $13,250.
