Priest Who Played on Basketball Team to Head Notre Dame

Associated Press

Father Edward A. Malloy, a theologian and associate provost at the University of Notre Dame, was named the university’s 16th president Friday and will succeed Father Theodore M. Hesburgh.

Malloy, 45, a native of Washington, and a Holy Cross priest who once played basketball for Notre Dame, was chosen from among five candidates.

He had been identified in published reports as the successor to Hesburgh, whose 35-year presidency brought new national prominence to the Catholic university, but had dismissed such reports as speculation.

Malloy will take office when Hesburgh, 69, retires next spring.

He is an associate professor of theology and has a doctorate in Christian ethics from Vanderbilt University.

He came to Notre Dame on a basketball scholarship and was graduated in 1963.
