Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park High and Bryan Dameworth of Agoura will be the leading Valley-area runners competing in the Southern Section cross-country championships today at Mt. San Antonio College.
The top teams from the Valley area include Thousand Oaks (4-A), Hart (3-A) and Agoura (2-A) in the boys divisions, and Thousand Oaks, Westlake and Newbury Park in the girls 4-A.
In the 4-A race, Sutton will attempt to win her 13th consecutive race and her third straight Southern Section title. She will be challenged by junior Brigid Freyene of Riverside Poly and sophomore Jamie Park of Santa Barbara.
Dameworth, a freshman, had the fastest qualifying time in the 2-A Division at last week’s preliminaries and will try to lead second-ranked Agoura past No. 1-ranked Walnut. He will be challenged by defending champion Chris Lugo of Valencia and sophomore Scott Hempel of Walnut.
Heather Scobie of Saugus also had the leading qualifying time in the girls 3-A Division. The sophomore finished second at the 1985 championships.
Thousand Oaks, the second-ranked team in the boys 4-A, will challenge No.1-ranked Palos Verdes for the team title while second-ranked Hart will battle top-ranked Arroyo in the boys 3-A race.
The first race of the day, the boys 3-A, will begin at 8:30 a.m.
