The Houston Astros signed free agent Davey Lopes to a two-year contract for an undisclosed amount of money, a club spokesman said Monday.

Lopes, 40, played a key role in Houston’s drive to the 1986 National League West Division championship after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 20, spokesman Chuck Pool said. Lopes plays outfield and third base for the Astros.

“Davey is a clutch player who had a very positive influence on our club after joining us in July,” said Dick Wagner, Astro president and general manager. “His ability and experience are a great help to our younger players.”

A veteran of 15 major league seasons, Lopes finished the 1986 season with a .275 average in 96 games. He had 7 home runs and 35 RBIs while stealing 25 bases. On Sept. 2, he stole his 24th base, the most ever by a player 40 years of age or older. Lopes has stolen 555 bases in his career.

“We did not announce the terms of the contract” that covers the 1987 and 1988 seasons, Pool said.
