Bills to block new federal rules allowing use of radiation to preserve pork and produce were introduced in the House and Senate by legislators who said the procedure was approved prematurely. Rep. Douglas H. Bosco (D-Occidental) said neither he nor Sen. George J. Mitchell (D-Me.) were “saying that food irradiation shouldn’t happen.” “We are saying that it shouldn’t happen until we’re sure it’s safe,” Bosco said.
