Workers’ Protest Stops Trains in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Bangladesh — About 20,000 railroad workers shut down Bangladesh’s railways Thursday, stranding about 1 million commuters, in a wildcat strike over the fatal beating of a conductor by ticketless passengers.

Wearing black badges, the striking railway workers demanded increased security and prosecution of the assailants.

Police said a senior railway official ordered a group of students to leave a first-class compartment after officials discovered they had no tickets. The students later attacked the official, who was rescued by passengers, then fatally beat a ticket collector who witnessed the incident and tried to inform police.
