COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Northridge Moves Into Semifinals

Kelly Winn scored what proved to be the winning run on Lisa Hall’s two-out single in the third inning as the Cal State Northridge women’s softball team defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 2-1, Saturday night in the Bakersfield tournament.
Northridge won two other games in the round-robin tournament and will face UC Riverside in a semifinal at 9 a.m. today. The winner will face Cal Poly Pomona for the championship.
In an earlier game, Northridge defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 6-4, after rallying from a 4-0 first-inning deficit.
In its first game, CSUN defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, as Lisa Erickson scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning.
BASEBALL
The Master’s College 17, West Coast Christian 9--The Master’s pounded out 19 hits, eight for extra bases, and had an 11-run seventh inning to coast to the win in the NAIA District III game at Master’s.
Eight hits, including a three-run home run by Tim Kane, three walks, a hit batter and an error accounted for the seventh-inning explosion by Master’s (5-2, 3-0 in the district).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal Lutheran 81, Southern California 77--Kim Peppi of Cal Lutheran might have saved her best game for last. In her final appearance Saturday night, Peppi had 21 points, 11 assists, 9 rebounds and 3 steals in the Golden State Athletic Conference game.
Peppi and Gloria Phillipps led a determined Cal Lutheran comeback in the second half. Trailing, 71-54, Cal Lutheran (10-17, 5-3 in conference) blitzed Southern California, 27-6, in the last eight minutes. Phillipps had a team-high 25 points and a game-high 21 rebounds.
St. Mary’s 79, The Master’s 64--Molly Robertson scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Char Reber added 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. Mary’s in an NAIA District III game at The Master’s.
Michelle Carter finished with 17 points for Master’s (6-20, 3-16 in district). Teammate Carolyn Waltman added 14 and Michelle Spink scored 11.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cal State Northridge def. UC Irvine, 15-8, 15-4, 15-6--Mike Bird, a senior outside hitter, had 13 kills to lead Northridge (7-10) to the nonconference win at home. Irvine is 0-7.
