British Tunnels to Help Toads Cross Roads

LONDON — A conservation group concerned about the mass slaughter of toads by motorists is building tunnels under a busy road to give toads safe passage during their annual journey to ponds where they mate and spawn.
The Fauna and Flora Preservation Society said Sunday it is working with a concrete manufacturer to build the tunnels under a main road west of London near Henley-on-Thames in a pioneering $1,500 project.
If the toads use the tunnels, the idea will be copied at other toad-risk sites in Britain, said a statement from the society, which is based at London Zoo.
The society already coordinates the national “help a toad across the road” campaign, which erects warning signs at nearly 200 sites.
