Six retired Argentine admirals surrendered in federal court to answer charges of human rights abuses during Argentina’s “dirty war” against communism--but only after their arrest had been ordered because they failed to appear earlier in the day. “It was an arm wrestle between justice and the past,” federal prosecutor Julio Strassera said after the six officers were brought before the court. Navy officials said the admirals appeared voluntarily but were locked up for the night and will be processed today. They are the first of about 150 military officers scheduled to be tried in a final round of accounting for rights abuses during Argentina’s eight-year military regime.
