A bitter 10-week strike by a black-dominated union against one of South Africa’s largest supermarket chains ended with workers accepting wage increases and improved benefits. More than 7,000 workers, most of them black, went on strike Dec. 18 at 120 stores of the OK Bazaars chain. They agreed to return to work Monday. During the strike, the company fired more than 500 workers who allegedly vandalized property or intimidated customers. On Jan. 9, two bombs exploded at an OK Bazaars outlet in Johannesburg, but no one was injured. The strikers denied any involvement with the bombing.
