Indonesia Opens Its First Condom Plant, Spurs Birth Control

JAKARTA, Indonesia — President Suharto opened Indonesia’s first condom manufacturing plant Wednesday, simultaneously boosting the economy and bolstering birth control efforts in the world’s fifth most populous country.
Haryono Suyono, head of the National Family Planning Coordinating Board, said the $16.8-million factory is the most modern of its kind in Southeast Asia. The factory, about 85 miles southeast of Jakarta, will have a capacity of 130 million condoms a year.
