Despite a drop in profit from the firm’s financial-services group, Santa Monica-based Fremont General Corp. posted a higher net profit from continuing operations for the first quarter ended March 31. The unconsolidated property and casualty group had a big jump in net income due to improved underwriting results and the income tax benefit from “fresh-start” adjustments in the loss reserves.
