NCAA Division II Tennis : 3 Chapman Players Gain Quarterfinals

Chapman players Miles Walker, Paul Wekesa and Olivier Amerlinck advanced Thursday to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II individual men’s tennis championships at Northridge.
Walker, the No. 3 seed, advanced by defeating Karl Huber, 6-4, 6-1, and Karl Johnson, 6-4, 6-2. Sixth-seeded Wekesa defeated Dionne Joannu, 7-6, 7-5, and then toppled Eduardo Afini, 6-2, 6-1. Amerlinck, who was unseeded, defeated Michael White, 6-3, 6-2, and Dave Kruger, 6-4, 7-5.
All three players resume play in the four-day tournament today at 9 a.m.
The other Chapman players didn’t fare as well. Paul Charlesworth upset seventh-seeded Rozzel Lightfoot, 6-4, 6-2, before losing to Benji Aquirre, 6-4, 6-2. Dave Seline lost to Johnson, 6-1, 6-3, and Allen Juinio lost to Tom Bogar, 4-6, 1-0, before retiring with an injured shoulder.
In doubles play, sixth-seeded Amerlinck-Walker lost to Robert Green-Barry Pelts, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Charlesworth-Seline beat Pat Emmet-Pat Johnson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, and Wekesa-Barry Hancock defeated Kruger-Nelson Emery, 6-2, 6-3.
