Coach Arrested in Steroid Case

MIAMI — A University of Miami football coach was arrested today on charges of trafficking in body-building steroids as U.S. Customs agents launched a nationwide crackdown on a smuggling ring.

Coach Pat Jacobs was among 34 people indicted in San Diego on charges related to the distribution ring, which began in Mexico and was headquartered in Southern California. Jacobs, 31, assistant UM football coach in charge of strength and conditioning, was arrested after Customs agents seized steroids, hypodermic needles and cash from his apartment in Miami, authorities said.
