W. German State Head Injured in Air Crash

LUEBECK, West Germany — The premier of the state of Schleswig-Holstein has been seriously injured in the crash of a twin-engined plane that killed the two pilots and injured his bodyguard.
A state official said Monday that Uwe Barschel’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Barschel, 43, a Christian Democrat who has governed West Germany’s northernmost state since 1982, and his bodyguard were taken to Luebeck’s University Hospital.
The U.S.-built Cessna 501 went down late Sunday as it approached the Luebeck airport after striking “a light tower or tree,” said Gerd Graetner, a police spokesman in the Baltic Sea port city of Luebeck.
