Last week Robert Hilburn argued that the “Sgt. Pepper” LP--despite remaining a “landmark work”--is not the Beatles’ best album because it is weighted down by seven songs that “represent the longest stretch of mediocre material” the group ever recorded. Calendar letter writers were not pleased--by a 9-1 ratio.
In this wonderful world of ours, everybody is entitled to his opinion. Unfortunately, Hilburn is constantly having his printed.
Was he referring to the same album I frequently pull from my record collection to enjoy? Maybe he’s confusing the Beatles with the Ruttles.
It’s too bad that the Beatles lacked Springsteen’s idealism and Bono’s missionary zeal. If they possessed those qualities, this tired, old mediocre album may have had a stronger impact on society and music in general.
