A state appeals court in Jersey City, N.J., overturned the jail terms of 110 teachers and other school employees sentenced for defying a back-to-work order during a strike in March. Instead, Judges Lawrence Bilder and Neil F. Deighan Jr. of the Appellate Division of Superior Court ordered the defendants to perform community service work. Immediately after the ruling, Superior Court Judge Paul R. Huot, who imposed the jail sentences, vacated the guilty pleas of 149 school employees in Lyndhurst and scheduled a new trial for August.
