A second-string United States swimming team won the women’s 400-meter medley relay for the Americans’ first gold medal in the 14th World University Games at Zagreb, Yugoslavia.
The four Americans--Susan O’Brian, Kim Rhodenbaugh, Jofi Eyles and Aimee Berzins--won the only gold by U.S. swimmers on the opening day with a time of 4 minutes 14.38 seconds.
Noemi Lung of Romania shattered games records in winning both individual women’s races, the 400-meter freestyle in 4:10.84 and the 200-meter medley in 2:15.64.
