Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth pledged that baseball would surpass the other major sports in hiring blacks and other minority group members for high-level, off-the-field jobs.
“Baseball will get its job done,” Ueberroth said at news conference at the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People convention in New York. He appeared with Benjamin Hooks, the civil rights group’s executive director.
Hooks said he has met with the owners of more than 20 of the 26 teams. He said there was some resistance from three, whom he did not name, but they later agreed to meet with him.
