Leach Advances to Today’s Semifinals

FORT WORTH, Tex. — Jonathan Leach of Laguna Beach overcame Brett Stern, 6-1, 7-5, Thursday to reach the singles semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 14 Hardcourt Championships held at Texas Christian University.

Leach will face No. 2-seeded Ivan Baron, who defeated Peter Ayers, 6-3, 6-3.

Unseeded Oliver Fernandez of Mexico outlasted Jimmy Panagopoulos, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Fernandez has advanced further than any unseeded player in the tournament’s history. He will face No. 1-seeded Thomas Ho, who easily defeated Michael Klein, 6-1, 6-1, Thursday.
