STAGING ‘CABARET’

It is ironic that William Wilson (“Up-to-Date Berlin Art: Link to L.A.,” June 28) mentions Bob Fosse’s Broadway version of “Cabaret” as a basis for his Hollywood movie adaptation, even as Hal Prince’s (director) and Ron Field’s (dances and cabaret numbers) re-creation of their Broadway original is playing (with Joel Grey) at the Music Center.

Upon second viewing of the stage version of “Cabaret,” one becomes shockingly aware that Fosse’s “game plan” for the movie “Cabaret” was inspired not only by the drawings of George Grosz and the German Realists, as suggested by Wilson, but by the brilliance of the original Broadway staging of Prince and Field.

This mistake regarding Fosse as the creator of “Cabaret” Broadway version was made in a Filmex program of a few years ago as well. One wonders if critics are aware of the history of related arts other than that of their own specialization.
