A city sewer blocked by debris spilled sewage into the San Diego River at Mission Center Drive Sunday night, the county health department reported.
An estimated 10 gallons of sewage per minute was flowing into the river when the spill was discovered at 7:22 p.m., said Larry Bodenhamer, a hazardous materials specialist for the county.
The blocked sewer was repaired by 9:30 p.m., and warning signs were posted 600 yards downstream, Bodenhamer said. The river flows into the “Dog Beach” area of Ocean Beach, where signs were already posted to warn bathers against entering the water because of a previous spill.
