NEW YORK — Cardinal John J. O’Connor, in a show of support for striking NBC workers, refused to allow a non-union television crew to attend a news conference at his residence Monday.
When told by an aide that the WNBC-TV crew was on its way, O’Connor said, “Just tell them they’re not invited.”
Frank Snell, an executive board member of Local 11 of the National Assn. of Broadcast Employees and Technicians, said a union representative went to the cardinal’s Madison Avenue residence before the news conference and asked that the crew not be admitted.
When the NBC crew members arrived, about 20 minutes late, they were told by one of the cardinal’s aides that they could not enter. They left without incident.
Members of the NABET, representing 2,800 workers in six cities, struck the network June 29.
