Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi struck back at dissidents in his ruling Congress-I Party, expelling three prominent critics, including his own cousin. Gandhi’s action followed by a day the resignation of Tourism Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed in a move seen to deepen the crisis of political confidence in the prime minister’s leadership. A government official said Gandhi expelled his cousin Arun Nehru, Vidya Charan Shukla and Arif Mohammed Khan, all members of Parliament, for unspecified anti-party activities.
