Regular Season Starts on Oct. 8 for NHL Teams

NEW YORK — The 1987-88 NHL regular season is to begin Oct. 8 with nine games and end April 3.
The Edmonton Oilers begin defense of their Stanley Cup title one day after the season opens, hosting the Detroit Red Wings Oct. 9.
Each of the league’s 21 teams plays 80 games. Teams in the Smythe, Norris and Adams divisions play divisional opponents eight times while teams in the Patrick Division play each other seven times.
There are only five dates during the season in which no games are scheduled: Christmas Eve, Christmas, the days before and after the All-Star Game (Feb. 9 at St. Louis) and March 11.
