Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev has called for greater efforts to speed up machine-building, a key area in his drive to revitalize the Soviet economy, the Communist Party newspaper Pravda said. Quoting a report by the news agency Tass, Pravda said Gorbachev told a meeting at the party Central Committee headquarters that the ruling Politburo is concerned about slow growth in the machine-building industry. He said machine-building is the base on which Soviet industrial production could be modernized, the paper reported.
