Senate Backs Delegation to Hanoi on MIAs

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted unanimous support Tuesday for a U.S. delegation seeking to determine the fate of Americans missing in action in Southeast Asia.
The delegation, appointed by President Reagan and headed by retired Army Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., will travel to Vietnam this weekend to hold talks with Vietnamese officials over the POW-MIA issue.
Vessey, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will arrive in Hanoi on Saturday for three days of talks on humanitarian issues, including the return of recoverable remains of those missing in action. The White House said the talks will not deal with political issues, such as whether the United States will grant diplomatic recognition to Vietnam.
The Senate resolution was approved, 92-0. It was sponsored by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a former Navy pilot who was shot down while flying a combat mission over North Vietnam in 1967 and held prisoner of war until 1973.
