SAN DIEGO — A 17-year-old boy was killed and another teen-ager was slightly injured today when a homemade pipe bomb exploded while they were handling it in their vehicle, police said.
A third teen-ager was uninjured in the 3:30 a.m. explosion in a residential neighborhood. The boy who was killed died instantly in the blast. The 17-year-old driver was treated for minor injuries and was taken to Juvenile Hall. A search of the driver’s home revealed galvanized pipes, timing devices and other material used to make explosive devices. Also seized by investigators were weapons, including an AK-47 semiautomatic assault rifle, Sgt. Frank Barone of the arson unit said. The identities of the youths were withheld because they are juveniles.
