Firefighters reported making progress against hundreds of wildfires raging in 13 states, and the National Weather Service said that most of the drought-plagued South could get rain by Monday. The U.S. Forest Service said that 157,000 acres of woodland in the region had burned since Oct. 27. The hardest-hit states were Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina, but fires also flared in Virginia, South Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. A fire in the western mountains of North Carolina reportedly was threatening the Maggie Valley residential area, and the Air National Guard was flying in fire-retardant to help save homes there.
