Southern Section Tennis : Corona del Mar Sweeps Riverside Poly, 18-0

Corona del Mar High School, seeded third in the Southern Section 4-A tennis playoffs, defeated Riverside Poly, 18-0, in a second-round match at Corona del Mar Saturday.

Danielle Scott and Robin Bain, the Sea View League’s top two singles players, swept their matches. Scott won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, and Bain won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. The Sea Kings are 18-2-1.

In other 4-A matches:

Edison 14, Foothill 4--The Chargers’ top singles player, Debbie Goldberg, beat her opponents, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, at Edison. Teammate Lisa Ammann also swept her matches, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. The Chargers are 19-2; Foothill finishes 16-4.

Palos Verdes 9, Dana Hills 9 (Palos Verdes wins on games, 80-75)--The Dolphins tied Palos Verdes in sets but lost in games at Dana Hills High School. Kristin Green, Dana Hills’ top singles player, swept her matches, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. Dana Hills finishes the season, 11-7.

In 3-A:

Laguna Hills 14, Katella 4--The Hawks’ top three singles players swept all nine sets, eliminating the Knights (15-4) at Katella. Jenny Marques won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0; Kim Wright won, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0; and Brook Fleming won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. Laguna Hills’ top doubles team, Katrina Heppler and Mai Nguyen, won, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Laguna Hills, the No. 3 team, is 20-0.

In 2-A:

Valencia 14, Palm Desert 4--The Tigers’ top singles players, Diane Ewing and Julie Williams, both swept their sets at Palm Desert High School. Ewing defeated her opponents, 6-3 (the only three games she has given up in the playoffs), 6-0, 6-0. Diann Stoll and Stacey Ziwos, Valencia’s top doubles team, won 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. The Tigers are now 14-4.
