Some of the best characters I’ve seen lately on TV are Mary Ellen, Lawrence and Garland in Pacific Bell’s continuing ads. The commercials take those three through their teens, the Depression and World War II to today. Their story is sentimental and nostalgic. I’m smiling, but with a lump in my throat.
