Head-on Collision of Freight Trains Kills 1

KEMMERER, Wyo. — Two Union Pacific freight trains collided head-on Sunday in southwest Wyoming when one apparently went through a signal, killing one crewman and injuring 11 others, officials said.
Union Pacific spokesman John Bromley said a 37-car eastbound train carrying cargo from Seattle to Chicago was supposed to stop on the main line to allow a 47-car westbound train heading from Chicago to Seattle to move onto a siding and go around it.
But he said the eastbound train failed to stop and continued past the siding, crashing into the westbound train before it could reach the bypass.
