Israeli Tactics

Why is it that the South African police, the Chilean government, the Russian KGB, etc. use “torture” to extract confessions from their captives while the Israeli secret police (Shin Bet) use “physical pressure”? Can it be that the Israelis actually believe that they can draw a distinction between a “moderate amount of physical pressure” and torture?
Dan Fisher (Part I, Oct. 31) reporting on the Israeli inquiry commission’s findings, felt that the report would trigger protests among the Palestinian Arabs. I hope the protest is not limited to the Arabs. The Israeli government, by condoning the use of torture, for whatever the reason, has debased itself in the eyes of the Western world. I, for one, am outraged and I can’t avoid wondering how many of my tax dollars were used to support this reprehensible activity over the last 16 years.
