Local News in Brief : AIDS Billboards Assailed
- Share via
A coalition of conservative women’s groups Wednesday declared their opposition to an anti-AIDS billboard campaign, denouncing it as misleading in its promotion of condoms as a preventive measure against the disease.
“Our main concern is that these billboards are going up across from schoolyards and parks,” said Leslie Dutton, a spokeswoman for the groups.
The billboard campaign, the first of its kind in the nation, began in early October, sponsored by the Los Angeles County Medical Assn.
Dutton said the coalition, made up of members from the American Assn. of Women, Black Americans for Family Values and other groups, has filed petitions with the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, urging that an order be issued prohibiting the 10,000-member medical association from continuing its campaign.
