Local News in Brief : Oil Spill Mopped Up

More than 3,000 gallons of crude oil spilled onto a Signal Hill street before workers contained the leak Thursday morning, authorities said.
The U.S. Coast Guard stopped the oil flow from a ruptured underground pipeline and there was “no danger of it contaminating any water,” Signal Hill Police Sgt. John Parker said.
Some of the oil had reached a storm drain that flows into the Los Angeles river basin and a light sheen reached the Cerritos Channel, according to Jim Porter, a supervisor with the city’s Marine Safety Office.
But an earth berm contained the oil, which was picked up with a vacuum truck, Parker said.
To locate the source of the leak, officials ordered oil wells in the undeveloped area, which is laced with underground oil lines, shut down temporarily, Parker said.
