Local News in Brief : Free Flu Shots Offered
- Share via
Free influenza shots are being provided at Los Angeles County public health centers in the wake of the first laboratory-confirmed cases of the illness this year, officials said.
The shots will be provided to county residents through Dec. 11. Information on dates and locations of immunization clinics is available by telephoning the county health centers listed under “health care” in the county government section of the White Pages.
The first reported case of influenza Type A was an 83-year-old woman who became ill last month while on a cruise to the Far East and was hospitalized with pneumonia on her return, officials said. A second confirmed case was reported in a medical attendant two days after exposure.
November is the optimal time to receive the vaccine, before the onset of the flu season in December and January, according to Dr. Stephen Waterman, chief of the county’s Acute Communicable Disease Control Program.
