The Times article on “Hard Times Hurt Values of Farm Life” by Paul Houston (Part I, Nov. 15) is the best accurate overall picture of what is happening that I have seen printed.
I am an Iowa resident visiting California. There are many misconceptions on farm programs; I have yet to see any farmer receiving a large government subsidy. The prosperity of the agricultural community will return only when commodity prices are more in line with production costs. It has steadily eroded since 1980.
