Young Gennie James has the central role in “The Secret Garden,” a TV adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic children’s novel. The movie, a “Hallmark Hall of Fame” presentation, will be broadcast from 9 to 11 p.m. Monday on CBS (Channels 2 and 8).
James plays Mary Lennox, who is sent to live at Misselthwaite Manor in rural England after her parents die. There she discovers a garden whose magical charms change her life.
Only 10, James has eight other films and TV movies to her credit, including “Places in the Heart,” “Alex: The Life of a Child” and “If Tomorrow Comes.”
But even if you haven’t seen her before, the adult cast should prove pleasingly familiar. Derek Jacobi plays the lord of Misselthwaite Manor, Billie Whitelaw is the woman who runs it and Sir Michael Hordern portrays the gardener.
