The New York Stock Exchange reported that third-quarter profits from its 392 member firms slumped to $442 million from $524 million in the year-ago quarter. Almost three fourths of its member firms doing business with the public were profitable in the third quarter, the NYSE said, the last quarter before the Oct. 19 stock market crash. Those profitable firms earned a combined pretax profit of $927 million. But 106 member firms which lost money during the July to September period posted combined losses of $170 million, the exchange said.
