Raimondo Manzini, 86, editor for 18 years of the Vatican daily L’Osservatore Romano. Manzini took over as editor of the Vatican newspaper in 1960 after working as editor of the Italian Roman Catholic daily L’Avvenire d’Italia and serving three terms as a member of Parliament. He changed the approach of L’Osservatore, devoting more space to photographs and cultural news. He also started weekly supplements to the Italian daily in English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese before his retirement in 1978. In a condolence message, Pope John Paul II praised Manzini’s work as a “promoter of Christian social doctrine.” In Rome on Thursday.
