Rod DeYoung doubled home Mark Steinert in the eighth inning Monday to break a 6-6 tie and lift Cypress College to a 7-6 victory over Golden West in the championship of the Cypress baseball tournament at Cypress.
Steinert had walked with one out in the eighth off losing pitcher Tony Beall.
Cypress (8-1) opened a 5-1 lead in the third on a grand slam by Tim Churchill. It was the second home run this season for Churchill, who has 21 RBIs in 9 games this season.
Golden West scored five runs to take a 6-5 lead in the fourth. But Cypress tied the score, 6-6, on Jason Friedman’ home run in the sixth.
Golden West had runners on second and third with no one out in the eighth, but winning pitcher Bill Bentley got a strikeout and a double play on a fly ball to left fielder Paul Bunch, who threw the runner out at home to end the inning.
Keith Laszlo and Mike Huyler had two hits each for Golden West (3-2).
