A woman who was killed when her car was struck by an Amtrak train has been identified as Kathleen Rose Herndon, 69, of Burbank, authorities said Thursday.
The crash occurred Wednesday on Buena Vista Street near Vanowen Street, Burbank police said. Herndon tried to drive her station wagon across the tracks despite flashing lights that warned of the approaching train, Lt. Van Miller said.
Although the lights were flashing, the crossing gate was only about halfway down, Miller said. Amtrak was investigating whether the gate was working properly, he said.
An Amtrak spokesman could not be reached for comment.
