GOOD NEWS--BAD NEWS: The IRS says its war on tax shelters is winding down. But that means there will be more IRS agents available to audit personal income tax returns this year.
In the past few years, the IRS has audited about 1% of all returns (970,000 out of 97 million last year). This year, with an estimated 107 million returns expected to be filed, about 1.5%, or 1.6 million, will get audited if all works out well--well for the IRS, that is.
