An illegal alien who was shot in the back during a robbery attempt by four armed men early Thursday is paralyzed from the waist down as a result, police said.
Antonio Lopez, 41, was standing on a San Ysidro street corner with three companions when he was approached by four men armed with a machete, a rifle and a handgun, police said.
The men demanded that Lopez and his friends turn over their money. After collecting $400 from the victims, the robbers asked Lopez for a ring he was wearing. When Lopez refused, one of the bandits shot him.
Lopez was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was in critical condition Thursday evening.
The police had no suspects in the case.
