The mayor and the Communist Party chief of Sumgait, a city in Azerbaijan where at least 32 people died in ethnic rioting last month, have been fired, reports from Soviet Armenia said. The victims were mainly Armenians killed by ethnic Azerbaijanis, the dominant, mainly Shia Muslim group in that republic. Armenians are mostly Christian. Arme1852399982demanding that Nagorno-Karabakh, an area of Azerbaijan that has an Armenian majority, be annexed by Armenia.
